Prof Timmons Roberts is Ittleson Professor of Sociology and Environmental Studies at Brown University. He taught at the College of William and Mary and directed its Program in Environmental Science and Policy (2001-2009), and held a joint appointment in Latin American studies and sociology and co-directed the Environmental Studies program at Tulane University (1991-2001). He was a James Martin 21st Century Professor at Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute in 2006-2007, and a research fellow at the College of William and Mary’s Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations in 2008-2009.  In 1992 he earned a PhD from Johns Hopkins University in Sociology’s Program in comparative international development. He holds a BA in biology (with research in tropical and temperate ecology) from Kenyon College. Timmons co-founded the Climate and Development Lab in 2010. He is also co-founder of AidData.org. Timmons is part of an international effort to produce a quantum leap in transparency in climate finance, and foreign aid more broadly. He is a leader in Rhode Island’s efforts to plan for how to adapt to climate changes, serving on the RI Climate Change Commission, created in 2010 by legislation written by him and his Brown students. Most recently, he was appointed to the Board on Environmental Change and Society of the National Academy of Sciences.

Danielle Falzon is a PhD student in Sociology concentrating on environmental sociology and development. Her research interests lie in climate change and human displacement with an emphasis on inequality and justice in climate policymaking. Prior to coming to Brown she earned her Master's in Sociology from Northeastern University, with a focus on the environment, globalization, and social movements, and her B.A. from Vassar College also in Sociology. Danielle has also organized environmental advocacy and activist campaigns, and worked as an Energy Associate with the organization Environment Massachusetts.

Dr Stacy-ann Robinson was appointed Voss Postdoctoral Research Associate in Environment and Society in July 2017. Prior to her appointment, she was the 2016/2017 Fox-Zucker Fellow at Yale University where she researched climate resilience and transformation in Caribbean small island developing states (SIDS). Stacy-ann is Jamaican and holds a PhD in Global Environmental Change from The Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. Her thesis focused on climate change adaptation in SIDS. Working alongside Prof Timmons Roberts in the CDL, Stacy-ann now focuses on climate change adaptation financing for SIDS and on negotiations in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Ike Uri is a PhD student in sociology, focusing on environmental sociology, climate change, and development. He is interested in climate policy in India, particularly as it relates to adaptation. Before coming to Brown, Ike received his BA in sociology from the University of Kansas, and he taught English for an academic year on a Fulbright grant in Tajikistan.

Ben Gross is a junior studying Computer Science. He is interested in connecting computer science to environmental issues, particularly as they relate to environmental justice. This summer, Ben worked a research intern at the Yale Myers Forest collecting data on oak regeneration, insect communities on different species of Hemlocks, and invasive species management. At Brown, Ben is a leader for Brown Outdoor Leadership Training (BOLT) and a member of the Ultimate Frisbee team, where he focuses on making the frisbee community at Brown a warmer, safer, and more inclusive space.

Gregory Hitch is a Ph.D. student in American Studies at Brown University, specializing in Indigenous environmental justice and North American environmental history. He also runs a research team in the Climate and Development Lab that explores Energy Sovereignty in Indigenous communities. Gregory’s other research interests include Science and Technology Studies and climate justice. And his most recent research has focused on the Dakota Access Pipeline actions at Standing Rock as well as climate-change impacts, anti-mining campaigns, and food sovereignty in the Western Great Lakes region, working most closely with members of the Menominee Nation.

Caroline Jones is a senior at Brown University and has been working with the Climate and Development Lab for three years. She has worked on environmental policy and education in Rhode Island as an intern with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, but now focuses on climate denial and corporate opposition efforts across the United States. Caroline is currently the TA for the Engaged Climate Policy course within the CDL, and will graduate in May 2019 with a degree in Environmental Studies with a focus on Sustainability In Development.

Angie Kim is a junior concentrating in Applied Mathematics. She is interested in environmental justice, climate models, the relationship between science and the environmental movement, and the ways in which tech can help and harm climate action. On campus, Angie involved in the Brown Political Review, CS for Social Change, and a climate modelling project in the Applied Math department. In her free time, Angie likes to run, roast vegetables, and do crossword puzzles.

Daniel Motley is a junior concentrating in Public Policy and Ethnic Studies with a focus on the intersections of Latinx Studies and Native American Studies. He is particularly interested in climate policy, environmental justice, tribal sovereignty, and decolonial frameworks of environmentalism. Daniel is also the President of the Ivy Native Council, where he collaborates with representatives from all Ivy League institutions in planning conferences, educational workshops, and social gatherings for Native American and Indigenous students.

Nathaniel Pettit is a junior concentrating in Public Policy.  He is interested in climate policy's intersection with transportation transformation and agricultural policy, particularly for family farms and rural towns.   At Brown, Nathaniel is a director of Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE), a student-run direct service and advocacy organization that works alongside marginally-housed Rhode Islanders to address the state's affordable housing crisis.

Rachel Risoleo is a senior concentrating in Political Science. She is passionate about environmental justice, and is working to better understand the ways in which social and political inequality determines increased vulnerability to the effects of climate change. In the past, Rachel has conducted research on human trafficking and human rights violations in the fishing industry. She spent the past summer working at a walk-in legal resource center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where she provided free legal information, assistance, and referrals to members of the local community. Her work at the CDL focuses on energy and climate influence networks in Rhode Island. At Brown, Rachel is a manager for Brown Outdoor Leadership Training (BOLT), where she works to create an inclusive and accessible community grounded in mentorship, education, and the environment.

Lisa Schold is a senior concentrating in Economics and Environmental Studies. She is interested in the intersection between environmental health, development, and economics. She studied abroad in Vietnam, South Africa, and Argentina to comparatively study public health systems. On campus, Lisa has assisted in research on the politics of fish in the United States, as well as economics research on coastal real estate markets. Her work in the CDL focuses on climate and energy influence networks in Rhode Island.

Clare Steinman is a senior studying Environmental Studies and Public Policy. She is particularly interested in renewable energy development and in the intersection of sustainability, economics, and policy. She spent last summer interning at Cambridge Associates, where she researched impact investing, and has previously worked for a renewable energy startup and the Rhode Island Alliance for Healthy Homes. Clare’s research at the CDL focuses on energy and climate influence networks within Rhode Island. At Brown, Clare is a columnist and editor for the opinions section of the Brown Daily Herald and plays on the ultimate frisbee team.

Cole Triedman is a sophomore concentrating in the Sustainability in Development track of Environmental Studies at Brown University. He is especially interested in better understanding how the adverse effects of climate change can amplify societal tensions and lead to violence, and exploring strategies to manage this pathway’s effects internationally. On campus, Cole is on the men’s club soccer team, a DJ for Brown Student Radio, a teaching assistant for introductory course Humans, Nature, and the Environment, and a member of the RI chapter of the Sunrise Movement.

Andrea Vega Troncoso is a junior at Brown, double-concentrating in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Environmental Studies, with a focus on environment and inequality. She is passionate about climate justice and environmental justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. She is interested in the ways in which dialogues and activism around climate justice can provide a vehicle for sovereignty and re-thinking development within the global South. At Brown, Andrea is the co-president of Dominican Students at Brown, where she helps organize cultural events, performance series, and workshops on Dominican and Caribbean identity and histories, and she works at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies as a student assistant. Andrea is also a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar, a fellowship that focuses on diversity and justice within the environmental field.

Nina Wolff Landau is a junior studying Environmental Studies with a focus on environment and inequality. Nina is passionate about environmental justice and bringing more people into the movement. On campus, Nina is involved with multiple environmental groups and serves as a Sexual Assault Peer Educator, running workshops about power, privilege, and oppression for student groups. Her work in the CDL focuses on new directions for transportation to mitigate climate change, promote health, and prioritize equity.
